3.WHERE DOES IT GO NEXT? WHAT HAPPENS THERE?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The food at this point is called chyme.

Before this, food is called bolus and is present in the stomach, Inside the stomach, cells start to secrete different acids that help increase acidity to a pH of 2. This strong acidic environment kills most bacteria and starts to chemically break apart the food. Movements of the smooth muscles in the stomach, known as peristalsis mix and churn the food up more. After the food has been well mixed and has a good consistency , it is ready to move to the small intestine. now the food is called chyme.

3. The food than moves into the small intestine, The small intestine is the part of the intestines where 90% of the digestion and absorption of food occurs, To move into the small intestine, chyme must pass through the pyloric sphincter. From here it enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. The liver mixes in bile, which helps break down fats in the food. The pancreas also secretes digestive enzymes that aid in digestion, Proteins, peptides and amino acids are acted upon by enzymes such as trypsin and chymotrypsin, secreted by the pancreas. This breaks them down to smaller peptides.Enzymes, like lipases secreted from the pancreas, act on fats and lipids in diet. This breaks the triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides. It is helped by bile salts secreted by the liver and the gall bladder. From here food which is digested is absorbed into the bloodstream and the remaining food moves into the large intestine
