Expert Solution

Swift, certain, fair and limited are the four most important characteristics of punishment in the criminal justice system. This would mean that a punishment should be given as soon as possible as delayed justice is denied justice. Thus, speedy process of the cases and punishing the criminals as quickly as possible would relieve the victims. Secondly, everyone should know that there is a punishment for every crime which means that no crime would be left unpunished. It’s the certainty of punishment that keep people away from committing crimes. Thirdly, a punishment should be fair which would mean that it should be in proportionate to the crime one commits. Punishing people severely for smaller or petty crimes or giving minor punishments for more serious crimes wouldn’t work well. Finally, punishment should also be limited because it shouldn’t aim to lock up a person for their entire life time or award capital punishment which would leave people without any scope for returning to the society without a second chance.
