It is likely you have seen a movie or television
show which features Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). Describe ways
in which the treatment is done today as well as its success rate
for providing relief from depression.

Today, ECT is administered to an estimated 100,000 people a
year, primarily in general hospital psychiatric units and in
psychiatric hospitals. It is generally used in treating patients
with severe depression, acute mania, and certain schizophrenic
syndromes. ECT is also used with some suicidal patients, who cannot
wait for antidepressant medication to take effect.
ECT is still the most controversial psychiatric treatment. Much
of the controversy surrounding ECT revolves around its
effectiveness vs. the side effects, the objectivity of ECT experts,
and the recent increase in ECT as a quick and easy solution,
instead of long-term psychotherapy or hospitalization.
Because of the concern about permanent memory loss and
confusion related to ECT treatment, some researchers recommend that
the treatment can only be used as a last resort now. ECT was used
far more than it is now. It was done without anaesthetic and often
without consent, and far more treatments were given than is common
now. Many people experienced it as more of a punishment than a
treatment.
ECT is still in use today but in a more controlled way.ECT is
no longer administered unmodified – without anaesthesia or muscle
relaxants. In fact, the procedure itself is rather anti-climactic.
It’s benefits too are impressive, with a success rate of between 60
per cent-90 per cent in severely depressed patients. But it is
still a controversial treatment procedure.
