Relate hydrogen bonding with solvent water to solubility
1)Predict solubility based on hydrogen bonding interactions:
The solubility of compounds in water increases with increase in hydrogen bond. the hydrogen bond increases the interaction of solute with water.
For example: ether i insoluble in water while ethanol is soluble in water due to hydrogen bond.
2) Predict electron distribution in a bond from electronegativity
The electron distribution will be like the electrons will be more towards more electronegative element than less electronegative element. There will be a partial positive charge on less electronegative element and a partial negative charge on more electronegative element.
3) Define the chemical basis of hydrogen bonding.
hydrogen bond is a chemical bond in which a hydrogen atom of one molecule is attracted to an electronegative atom( F, O ,N ), usually of another molecule.
So the chemical basis is the highly electronegtive nature of F or O or N, as compared to hdyrogen.
4)Identify and construct hydrogen bond donor and acceptor groups:
H-bond donor: the molecules in which an H atom is connected to F
or N or O atom.
H bond acceptor: The molecules in which a N O or F with at least
one lone pair of electrons are present.
