In the elementary school ages, there are reading as well as decoding of information followed by confirmation and fluency. During the ages 6-7, the child starts to learn the correlation between different letters. The child begins to understand and recognise sounds followed by forming an association between the printed letters along with the spoken words. The child starts reading high frequency words through simple texts. Also, he begins recognition of words that are phonically regular and starts skill development such that he would be able to sound out the new word syllables.
This is acquired through direct letter sound relationships and their practice. The child begins to read simpler stories where he uses phonics as. The high frequency words. There is development of more advanced language patterns as well as concepts and vocabulary.
Around 7-8 years of age, the child would start reading familiar stories as well as read simpler selections, such that their fluency would be increased. Basic decoding elements would be consolidated and the child would begin to understand meaning as well as begin to select familiar stories.
There would be direct instructions in the decoding skills, with the development of wide reading, thst eoulf take place both at the independent levels as well as instructions at the independent levels. This occurs by incorporation of interesting materials so that fluent reading would be promoted. Language development occurs by independent reading at a level above the present level with building of concepts.
