Sort the following materials by those that show capillary rise and those that do not.

wick of a burning candle

raincoat exposed to rain

fabric of plastic umbrella in rain

tea spilled on glass slab

bristles of a paint brush in water

sponge pads used for cleaning vessels

milk in plastic container

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Materials that show Capillary Rise are:

sponge pads used for cleaning vessels

bristles of a paint brush in water

wick of a burning candle

2) Materials that do not show Capillary Rise are:

raincoat exposed to rain

fabric of plastic umbrella in rain

tea spilled on glass slab

milk in plastic container

Reason: Capillary action is the momentum of H2O (or any liquid) through a narrow diameter tube. This force is determined by the molecular attraction between water and the absorbing substance. Adhesion is the attractive force between the liquid and other objects, which tends to move the water along the capillary. wick, sponge & bristles have narro diameter substances hence they will show capillary action. Plastic container, glass slab, fabric of plastic and rain coat (water repellant material) are broader diameter materials, they do not show this property.

For this assignment, find out how to do a bubble sort, selection sort, or insertion sort in Java. You have the option to choose but you must label (with comments) the algorithm you choose to implement. Convert that algorithm to a generic algorithm and constraint it to only using numerics. Your method should accept an array as a parameter and sort the content of the array. If you wish, you can throw an exception if the contents of the array...

Sorting – Insertion Sort Sort the list 0, 3, -10,-2,10,-2 using insertion sort, ascending. Show the list after each outer loop. Do his manually, i.e. step through the algorithm yourself without a computer. This question is related to data structure and algorithm in javascript (.js). C++ --------------------------------------------- Do a comparison of a slow sort with Big O(n2) (selection sort, insertion sort, or bubble sort) and one faster sort of Big O(n * log n) (mergesort or quicksort). Count the number of moves (a swap counts as one move). With mergesort, you can count the range of the part of the array you are sorting (i.e. last-first+1). Use the code from the textbook (copy from the lecture notes) and put in an extra reference parameter for...
