proporties of alpha rays
An alpha () particle is a Helium nucleus (24He).
Charge = +2 and Mass = 6.6466 × 10–27 kg Range = 10 cm in air.
Properties :
a) The energy and characteristic Half Life of alpha -particle is different as per source. But alpha particles emitted from given radionuclide have about the same discrete energy.
b) Alpha Particles travel along stright track. some may scatter near the end of their path.
c) Speed of alphs particle is of the order of 1/20 th that of speed of light.
d) Because of relative large mass and speed they have large kinetic energy.
e) Alpha particle cause ionization of gas they pass through. This ionization can be achieved by two ways -
i) through direct collision with an orbital electron and
ii) through electrostatic interactions of electrostatic fields.
f) Penetration power of alpha particles is very low.
g) Alpha Particles can induce an artificial radioactivity in certain nuclei.
