a) Identify at least four different types of loads which may be exerted on a soil due to a superimposed structure. b) Identify at least four loads due to subsoil conditions.
Loads exerted on soil due to super imposed structure are
1. Dead load of structure : Load due to weight of structure and its components
2. Live load : Load due to occupants of building or any movable load
3. Wind load : Load acting on superstructure due to wind is ultimately transferred to ground
4 . Snow load: Load due to snow acting on superstructure is transferred to ground
5 Impact load : Load due to sudden impact in superstructure due to working of machines , cars etc is transferred to ground.
b) Loads acting on soil due to subsoil condition are
1. Seepage forces: Due to movement of water in subsoil
2. Earthquake forces : During earthquake forces are exerted on soil causing liquefaction
3. Effective stress: Loads act on soil due to self weight of soil at any depth
4. Pore water pressure: Forces acts on soil due to pore pressure of water in soil voids
5. Lateral earth pressure : Horizontal forces act on soil due to lateral pressure of soil
