Was there any pattern across Amazon’s international entries?
Yes, there were some sort of pattern across Amazon's international entries. They used similar patterns to enter into various international markets.
While entering various markets they either used acquisition strategy or launched their websites.
Acquisition strategy: The acquisition strategy was important as it helped the company to adapt fast to the market, and also it helped to beat the competition. Countries in which the company used acquisition strategies include UK, German, Spain, and China. The company acquired Bookpages.co.uk, ABC Bücherdienst/Telebuch.de, BuyVip and Joyo.com in U.K., German and China respectively before they ventured into these markets.
Launched their websites: The most common pattern that was used by the Amazon before entering the market was launching a website. Launching a website provided an online platform where the customers could purchase the products. In France, Japan, Canada, Italy, Spain, India, and Brazil the company launched the following websites Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.ca, Amazon.it, Amazon.ens, Junglee.com (now amazon.in) and Amazon.com.br.
The mode of entry was determined by the market characteristics and what was perceived to be the most appropriate strategy depending on the prevailing market condition.
