1. Are there any general patterns to the distribution of the Ensatina salamanders? Describe the pattern that you see. Does the pattern make sense given the information on these salamanders in the background information? Expand on your previous answer.

2. How many distinct populations can you observe based on the location of the specimens (disregard the colors for the time being)? Which colored populations appear to be single population? Explain.

Stebbins decided that the Ensatina salamanders were not four separate species as previous biologist had determined but were instead a complex of the seven subspecies given below all of the species Ensatina eschscholtzii. Cut out each of the pictures of the representative Ensatina subspecies, arrange them on your map, and answer the following questions.

3. Based on the appearance of the specimens, what general pattern emerges in the distribution of the Ensatina salamanders?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • 1) Ensatina salamander is a slender shiny dorsum salamander.
  • They are found in areas such as specific coast of north america, central california, oregon, and washington to southern british columbia.
  • they are mainly found in sierra nevada mountains.
  • this species mostly prefer cool humid habitat with trees such as maple , redwood ,oak, cedar and pine.
  • they are mainly found in areas having slowly flowing streams and rivers

Speciation;

  • Monterey ensatina , mainly found in coastal areas of southern california

this species is characterized with brick red or light brown slender dorsal surface and limbs are lighter in colour.

this pattern helps them to hide in this area due to the camouflage

  • small or yellow blotched ensatina - this salamandrs are charactterisied with dorsum having black or dark brown in colour with irregular botches which are pale yellow or yellow green in colour, they are mainly found in foothills of kern county of california. this region help them to camouflage with this environment.
  • painted ensatina- they are having dorsum with dark brown to black in colour and are having striations of whitish yellow to orange in colour. the are mainly found in southern oregon coastal areas and northern california, the coastal areas soil are in almost camouflage with salamader.
  • sierra nevada ensatina- is having dark brown or black dorsum with orange or red blotches, mainly found in areas- sierra navada mountain pockets and most abundant in redwood grooves of sequoia and kings canyon national parks as they are camouflage to this environment
  • yellow eyed ensatina- this are having an yellow patch on upper eye and colour of dorsum- brown to orange brown- mainly found in san fransisco bay.
  • the pattern of different salamanders found in different area depending upon the colour variations in the environment in which they are found, this colour varation pattern found in salamander help them to exhibit camouflage, so that they are protected from predators.
