Gwendolyn Brooks writes a very short poem about the lifestyle
of an elderly couple who lives by themselves, in a single room they
rented. The piece is titled The Bean Eaters and it is very sad, but
accurate depiction of how some elderly couples live.
There are a few quotes that capture the essence of their lives,
“They eat beans mostly, this old yellow pair…Plain chipware on a
plain and creaking wood, tin flatware…Remembering, with tinklings,
and twinges…their rented back room that is full of beads and
receipts and dolls and cloths, tobacco crumbs, vases and
fringes.”The argument could be made that the mood of the is more
reflective. It just talks about what elderly couples go through in
life right from remebering their younger times and sharing memories
to being with each other as they have aged. This age either develops
wisdom in them and they share it with others or despair wherein
some elderly couples feel that they havent achieved anything in
life when they had the time. Either they feel happy remembering
their old days or they just count their days to death.
