Write a brief essay as to what is important to you about this issue, and why?

“Nuclear weapons are an explosive device that derives its destructive forces from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission reactions of a thermonuclear bomb.”

As per statistics of 2006, currently, there are 27000 nuclear warheads with the explosive force of 10 billion tons of TNT, 2 tons for every human being. They have an effect equivalent to 200,000 times of bombs dropped in Hiroshima. There are 2000-3000 in ready to launch in few minutes notice. The highest number being with Russia, followed by The US who hold almost 90% of the total nuclear warheads, China, France, UK, Israel, India, Pakistan are few other countries with nuclear warheads.

The end of the cold war and continuous armament by all rivals led to a strategic shift to the need and reason to have nuclear weapons. Some of the characteristics of the needs of 21st-century nuclear weapons and their infrastructure include the following:

1. Need weapons with high reliability and safety with low maintenance implications
2. Specifically designed weapons to target heavily armed military targets
3. Manufacture weapons customized to 21st-century complex issues and threats
4. The weapons should reduce the need to stockpile and design weapons to address many threats and reduce costs.
5. The terrorist threat requires weapons with high security and protect them from unauthorized use.
6. The weapons should be designed without consideration for the delivery platform hence maximizing their adaptability to different platforms, for example, the type of aircraft to launch a weapon could be adapted according to the threat.
7. Nuclear weapons can be used to counter biological threats
8. The nuclear weapons should be adapted to the 21st-century requirement and the need to test them for use in emergencies, need to revive research in nuclear physics.

To sum it up nuclear weapons are not needed for aggression but as means of protection, safety to counteract factors which are the current prevailing threats of terrorism and aggression by certain countries.
