Expert Solution

There are many incidents when listening effectively has become a huge point in my progress. I am mentioning some incidents.

  • We had a seminar session in our university where an expert lecturer has been called to address the professors. The expert lecturer is a very renowned person in his own field. When he started speaking, the pitch of his voice is very low, which does not allow us to listen to him effectively. Some technician has set the mike wrongly, due to which sometimes a lod beep is also emerging from the mike. These situations has lead to a failure in understanding what he was delivering. Environmental factors such as lighting, temperature, and furniture affect our ability to listen. The poor installation of the speaker system was the enviornmental barrier in my case.
  • Secondly, once in an performance appraisal meeting, I wasn't able to lusten effextively due to poor lightening of teh room. A room that is too dark can make us sleepy, just as a room that is too warm or cool can raise awareness of our physical discomfort to a point that it is distracting. Soon before this setting was the lunch break which added fuel to my sleep. This is also an environmental barrier.
  • Some seating arrangements facilitate listening, while others separate people. In general, listening is easier when listeners can make direct eye contact with and are in close physical proximity to a speaker. In an group discussion once, I was made to sit next to a person who is very distracting. He continuously keeps on talking to himself though not in a loud voice, but had affect my psychological mindset tremendously thus halting my listening and speaking skills.
