TBI Treatment App Discussion
Respond to this discussion question by Thursday, June 11
Consider that the hallmark of deficits in TBI is cognitive deficits. Cognitive deficits involve the areas of orientation, attention, memory, problem-solving and reasoning, and executive functioning.
Choose one of these areas and discuss an app for a person's cell phone or tablet that would be an effective treatment activity for that person.
In the stressful life of today, it is very important to be not only physically fit but also mentally fit. A good mental health is important for all other parts of our life. Adverse mental changes affect almost every part of our life, whether it is an individual level, family level or community level.
There are apps that do not directly target mental health, but aim to increase cognitive functioning. Research has shown that people who are engaged in such video games are less likely to develop brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. Keeping the brain active is as important as physical exercise and these apps can help people stay mentally fit. Research has proven that playing video games for a few minutes everyday can change a person's mind and can positively affect the working memory, processing speed and other brain functions. One such brain exercising app is Lumosity.
Lumosity is divided into sessions of three games designed to achieve enhancement in three areas of brain functioning - memory, attention, problem solving and flexibility and speed of thinking. There is a time limit for each session and change every time. One session a day can improve mental skills and users can track their progress and even compare their performance with others. Even the elderly can play and enjoy these games.
