The mass of an iron bolt was 5.4 greater when it was manufactured. After being bolted to an outdoor structure for several months, the mass of the bolt was found to hae increased by 0.2 grams. Given the following balanced equation for the reaction, does the example support the law of conservation of mass? Why or why not?
4Fe +3O2--> 2Fe2O3
4Fe +3O2 2Fe2O3
Yes,the given equation supports the conversion of mass .
When iron is exposed to atmosphere it absorbs the atmospheric oxygen and forms Fe2O3
Molar mass of Fe is 55.85 g/mol
Molar mass of Fe2O3 is (2xAt.mass of Fe) + (3xAt.mass of O )
= ( 2x55.85) + ( 3x16)
= 159.7 g/mol
Molar mass of O2 is = 2x16 = 32 g/mol
According to the balanced equation ,
4x55.85(=223.4) g of Fe reacts with 3x32(=96) g of O2 to produces 2x159.7(=319.4) g of Fe2O3
So total mass of the reactants is = 223.4 + 96 = 319.4 g
total mass of the products is = 319.4 g
So the total mass of the reactants = total mass of the products
Therefore the mass is conserved
