In the simulation on Solution Preparation you are instructed to invert the volumetric flask to mix the contents by covering the opening with a gloved finger. Explain why this is a bad idea.

Solutions

Expert Solution

There are two main reasons behind not covering the opening of volumetric flask with gloved fingers-

1. There are chances that the gloves have some compounds or salts on them. When the solution comes in contact eith glove, the salts will also get mixed up in the solution altering with the concentration as well as the nature of solution.

2. Covering the opening with inger does not provide protection against spillage and there are very high chances of the solution dropping out from the opening resulting in loss of solution.

Thus, volumetric flask should always be covered up with stopper and then only it shoud be inverted for mixing the solution well.

Having trouble calculating the error of a diluted solution in a 100mL volumetric flask. Concentration is 0.005 +/- 0.005M Amount of Concentrated solution: 5.0mL +/- 0.1mL Volumetric flask: 100mL +/- 0.08mL My calculation so far is ((0.1/5)+(0.005/0.005)+(0.08/100))*.00025 I keep getting 0.0002552 as my error but the answer key is 0.00003. Whats wrong in my formula?
