With reference to Gergen and Brush, Should universities require history of psychology courses for psychology degrees?
-Gergen, K. J. (1973). Social psychology as history. Journal of personality and social psychology, 26(2).
-Brush, S. G. (1974). Should the history of science be rated X? Science, 183(4130), 1164-1172.
Present is the continuation of the past and present is always built in the foundations of the past. This would mean that any discipline should be able to bring out the importance of learning the history of that discipline which would help the learners understand how a particular discipline evolved over a period of time. This would mean that people would be able to see the historical changes over a period of time as every passing generation would change the way they think, behave and live thus, demanding the all the fields, especially, social psychology and psychology where the existing theories may not be enough o explain the present generation. Thus, including the historical background would provide a continuity not only to the discipline in question but also to the society and its development. So, universities should include history of psychology courses for psychology degrees.
