An AISI 1010 carbon steel plate of 1 by 1 m size and of 6 mm thickness is hung vertically after a heat treatment to 300°C uniform temperature. It is cooled by ambient air at 20°C flowing parallel to the plate in transverse direction.

a) Considering both forced and natural convection, for 8 m/s transverse air velocity, determine the rate of heat transfer from the plate and the corresponding instantaneous rate of change of the plate temperature.

b) For the transverse air velocities in 1-15 m/s range, plot the heat transfer coefficients from the plate associated with forced convection, natural convection and mixed convection on the same graph.

A low-carbon steel plate is 270 mm wide and 25 mm thick. It is reduced in one pass in a two‑high rolling mill to a thickness of 20 mm. Roll radius = 300 mm, and roll speed = 30 m/min. Strength coefficient = 500 MPa, and strain hardening exponent = 0.25. Determine (a) roll force, N (b) roll torque, N-m and (c) power required to perform the operation kW.

3c) List and explain why AISI 1050 Plain Carbon Steel is more prone to cracking and distortion as compared to AISI 01 Tool Steel during hardening heat treatment. remarks: For the question above, shouldn’t it be the other way round? AISI 01 Tool steel have higher hardenability so quenching in water will crack in comparision to plain carbon steel that has low hardenability so it requires fast cooling. Need help with this, thanks.

A plain carbon steel ball 2 mm in diameter is heated to 1200 K in an oven and then cooled slowly in ambient air at 300 K. The convection heat transfer coefficient between air and this steel ball is 20 W / (m2 * K). A person drops a cylindrical steel bar (?=9.0×1010 Pa) from a height of 1.00 m (distance between the floor and the bottom of the vertically oriented bar). The bar, of length ?=0.73 m, radius ?=0.75 cm, and mass ?=1.70 kg, hits the floor and bounces up, maintaining its vertical orientation. Assuming the collision with the floor is elastic, and that no rotation occurs, what is the maximum compression of the bar?
