Expert Solution

Open source R&D is coming up as a good option to bring in more trans[parancy in research and development. unlike the traditional R&D where in it takes 10-15 years and billion sof dollors to complete a research, open source R&D will make the process much faster and cheaper. The reason being the fact that a lot of information of the product which is already available can be made use of in doing the research.

In traditional research , many of the research outcomes does not get approval and most of the research budget gets spent on recovering those unapproved research outcomes.

Benefits

1. Lot of data and information on already concluded research or ongoing research is available for free. including patented information

2. A new researcher need not have to start from scratch, instead he/she can continue from an already avilable research data

3. Expenditure on research will be less and hence scholors need not have to depend on big sponsorships and their contracts to conduct research

4. Will bring in more transparancy on the research and reasearch methods

Limitations

1. For profit companies will not give away thier data and patent information

2. Consensus is required from a lot of government bodies and institutions to take up this initiative

3. If companies are not in support of the open source, they will stop reinvesting their profit into R&D. this amout is huge and cannot be recovered through grants or from governmental institutions.
