In order to know about solubility for caffeine and benzoic acid, I put caffeine and benzoic acid in water and HCl and NaOH, and Caffeine was miscible in NaOH and Benzoic acid was miscible in HCl.

1. could you explain me why?

2. How would you know if caffeine and benzoic acid are acid or base?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1

Benzoic acid dissolve in NaOH ,Caffene in HCl

benzene weakly ionise in water so it shows poor solubility in water.it has non polar part benzene

C6H5COOH + H2O <---> C6H5COO- + H3O+

in acidic medium equilibrium shift to left so insoluble in acid

in basic medium equilibrium shift to right

In alkaline medium, benzoic acid becomes soluble. The abundant OH- ions will react fully with benzoic acid in acid-base reaction to form water and benzoate ion, which now is soluble in water due to strong ion-dipole forces of attraction.

2

benzoic acid is acid because it react with base

caffene is base because it react with acid

How do i determine the distribution coefficent of benzoic acid? I used 0.050 grams of benzoic acid and performed extractions 3 times using 2.0 ml of methylene cloride and 2.0 mL of water and got around 0.035 grams after all the extractions done. also is there a correlation between the values of the distribution coefficent and the polarity of the compound? thank you
