  1. (2 pts) Hannah is an 18 year old female swimmer who’s primary stroke is the butterfly. Due to repetitive motion shoulder injury, she has been participating in physical therapy for the last 2 weeks. She has a BMI of 19 kg/m2 and has no other orthopedic or heath issues. Based on your knowledge of the McGill’s Torso Endurance Test would this test be appropriate for Hannah? Provide details to support your answer.
  1. (3pts) Miles is a 52 yo male who is a recreational triathlete. His BMI is 24.3 kg/m2. He does not have any orthopedic or health issues. He is concerned about his overall core strength so you administer the McGill Torso Endurance test. His results are below.

Expert Solution

1.yes The test will be suitable for her.

McGill’s Torso Endurance Test is a test used to asses the endurance of torso stabilizer muscles. The test consists of 3 tests that measure all aspects of torso strength via isometric endurance.

  • The flexor endurance test is tests that assess muscular endurance of the deep core muscles (i.e., transverse abdominis, quadratus lumborum, and erector spinae). It is a timed test involving a static, isometric contraction of the anterior muscles, stabilizing the spine.
  • The trunk lateral endurance test, assesses muscular endurance of the lateral core muscles (i.e., transverse abdominis, obliques, quadratus lumborum, and erector spinae).
  • The trunk extensor endurance test is used to assess muscular endurance of the torso extensor muscles (i.e., erector spinae, longissimus, iliocostalis, and multifidi)

The primary movers of the butterfly stroke are the pectoralis major in your chest and the latissimus dorsi , which power upper arm adduction. The muscles of the upperbody and the trunk are necessary for the butterfly event. As this test tests the endurance of these muscles it is suitable for testing her.
