Dr. E. N. Gineer is trying to build a new device that requires a component of the device to be strongly paramagnetic. To keep the device affordable to the consumer, only elements in Periods 1-4 are available for use (Period 5 and below elements tend to be rarer and more expensive). Which element, which can provide the strongest paramagnetic interaction, should be used? (Only enter the chemical symbol for the element)
Cr can provide the best paramagnetic interaction.Unpaired electrons are responsible for paramagnetic behavior. Now if we analyze the electronic configuration of elements of period 1-4 then we can see Cr has the highest number of unpaired electrons. For S block elements maximum number of unpaired electron 1 and for P block element maximum number of unpaired electron 3.For transition metals the unpaired electrons in (n-1)d orbitals are responsible for paramagnetic properties. Both Cr and Mn has 5 unpaired 3d electrons .but in case of chromium 3s also has one unpaired electron .so Cr will provide highest paramagnetic interaction.
