In 250 to 500 words, describe the most interesting area of counseling (i.e., treatment, research, teaching, supervision, consulting, outreach, etc.) and explain why. What specifically would you like to pursue within that area (i.e., HIV/AIDS outreach, teaching of counseling to undergraduates, therapy with families, etc.)? Conduct some outside research, and discuss some current trends in that specific area
Counseling, according to APA, is a general practice and health service provider specialty in professional psychology. Counseling psychology addresses the emotional, social, work, school and physical health concerns people may have at different stages in their lives, focusing on typical life stresses and more severe issues with which people may struggle as individuals and as a part of families, groups and organizations. Thus the most interesting area, according to me, is treatment. Counseling is a life long process. So exploring the exact problem and finally give the proper treatment is quiet interesting. When you see that the client who came to you with several problems is somehow getting free from all the problems and you are responsible for that is very satisfactory. As it is a life long process it is very lengthy. Both the counselor and the counselee go through a long term process. Thus a bond, and a relationship of trust is built. This is something creative and sometimes a counselor have to think about remedies out of box. So after every successful treatment is done, there is a satisfaction.
Therapy with families will be my choice. Family therapy is a type of therapy through which family members can solve conflicts and improve communication among them. Breaking anything is very easy but not holding anything is that much easy. Thus it will give me satisfaction if I can help a family.
