You are dispatched for a report of a student refusing to leave a computer lab when instructed to do so by the Lab Tech. The student is distraught and threatening the Lab Tech. Multiple people in the lab have reported the disturbance. The student is accompanied by others. What do you do and why?*'
There are certain issues that need to be known before moving ahead in the case. Firstly, the age, class of study and other demographic factors related to him such as race, family particulars, area of residing need to be known. Secondly the case history needs to be known, which would include the nature of disturbances created, issues that led to escalation of the conflict and different people involved in it. It would also be worth knowing if the same set of people are involved each time or there is a distinct pattern each time. These factors would need to assess the root cause of the issue. It can be a case of racial discrimination, personal grudge of a staff, inter group conflicts or a gang mentality developed by a group of students. or even a psychopathic case.
The appropriate course of action would include asking the person to leave immediately at that time to stop the issue from escalating further. If he refuses to leave, security must be called for taking him away. He must be called later for a dialogue and asked about his behaviour. The further course of action would depend on the identification of root cause, which can be a warning, a counselling session, a disciplinary action or a behavioural therapy if needed. It should also include action against others accompanying him, or the ones who might be directly or indirectly involved in instigating him to do this. Institute should also revamp its code of conduct for students and communicate it to the students, expressly stating the penalties for violation for future.
