1. Considering heat transfer issues, give two reasons to indicate why cutting
fluid applied in the form of a mist performs better in comparison to a flood
application.

Solutions

Expert Solution

In order to maximize the effect of cutting fluid, the fluid must have the following properties

  • Lubricating property is very good
  • Heat absorption capacity is very high
  • Flash Point is very high
  • Chemically stable
  • Emit no toxic fumes

The most common type coolant type in machining is flood type application. In which the outlet of the given pipe is connected to nozzle through flexible pipe. The nozzle can be adjusted to direct stream of the fluid at the cutting zone.

And the second one is mist application. In which cutting fluids can be applied as an air-carried mist. This mist was directed at the cutting zone with a high velocity.

Mist application have better advantage than flood application, because in heat transfer point of view during the formation of mist the temperature of fluid falls due to the expansion, so it can absorb more heat. And in the mist application having we are having cooling effects at higher speeds.

A steel pipe (k = 43 W/m K) carries a heat‐transfer fluid and is covered with a 2‐cm layer of calcium silicate insulation (k = 0.029 W/m K) to reduce the heat loss. The inside and outside pipe diameters are 5.25 cm and 6.03cm, respectively. If the inner pipe surface is at 150°C and the exterior surface of the insulation is at 25°C, calculate: (a) The rate of heat loss per unit length of pipe (b) The temperature of the...

The rate of heat transfer, Q [energy/time = power] through a pipe wall between a fluid and the surroundings depends on fluid properties: density (ρ), viscosity (μ), specific heat (cp [energy/temperature/mass]); and also on pipe and flow properties: the length (l), diameter (D), and thermal conductivity (λ [power/length/temperature]) of the pipe, fluid mean velocity (V), and the temperature difference (ΔT) between the pipe wall and the surroundings. Use dimensional analysis to express this system in terms of dimensionless numbers. The...
