1. The scientific method of determining the age of the solar system

a. uses the detailed record of impacts on the moon to determine the age of the solar system.

b. shows that the age of the solar system is nearly 14 billion years.

c. uses the current surface temperature of the sun and the rate at which this temperature is decreasing.

d. uses measurements of the proportions of various isotopes in meteorites.

2. Which of the following gives the best reason as to why it is difficult to learn about extrasolar planets.

a. There are few planets around other stars.
b. Other stars are very far away and stars are much brighter than planets.
c. The stars are far away so it takes a long time for the light from the star or planet to reach us on the Earth.
d. Most planets that orbit other stars orbit close to the star so they are hidden from us by the outer atmosphere of the star.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The scientific method of determining the age of the solar system is by uses measurement of the proportions of various isotopes in meteorites.

By studying several factors, scientists have determined the age of solar system is about 4.6 billion years old and solar system is formed by collapsing of heavily cloud of dust and gases. The age of solar system is determined by mostly meteorites and using radioactive dating technique. Meteorites are the components of our planets. By dating these meteorites allows us to give a estimated age of our solar system. The oldest meteorites which are found on over solar system is 4.57 years old, therefore the age is determined by these meteorites.

So, option (d) is our right choice.

2. It is difficult to learn about extra solar planets because the other stars are very far away from the earth and also stars and much brighter than their planets.

We can say that the amount of light emitted by star is highly ordered multiples of the light emitted by the orbiting planet around that star.

As because of above mentioned statement we can not direct detect the light from planet. If the light of star is suppressed, then the faint light from the planet can be detected.

So, option (b) is our right choice.

The Scientific Method and Statistical Reasoning Using the tools of the scientific method and understanding statistical reasoning can strengthen our critical thinking. Answer two of the following questions to explore these issues: What misconceptions often rise around the idea of a scientific “theory”? What are the characteristics of good scientific theories? Where have you seen statistical data (or charts or graphs) used in a way that obscures critical thinking? Describe the issues and how you might correct these.

Answer the following: Define “The Scientific Method”. Describe the specific steps involved in the Scientific Method procedure, and characterize how economists apply these steps in their work. Why do economists and other scientists always make the assumption “ceteris paribus = other things being constant” as they construct (build) their hypotheses (models)? What is a model, why model, and how can you separate a good model from a bad model? Distinguish a positive statement from a normative statement, and give one...
