Make-or-Buy, Traditional and ABC Analysis Brees, Inc., a manufacturer of golf carts, has just received an offer from a supplier to provide 2,500 units of a component used in its main product. The component is a track assembly that is currently produced internally. The supplier has offered to sell the track assembly for $72 per unit. Brees is currently using a traditional, unit-based costing system that assigns overhead to jobs on the basis of direct labor hours. The results of the study revealed the following: 3 setups—$1,180 each (The setups would be avoided, and total spending could be reduced by $1,180 per setup.) One half-time inspector is needed. The company already uses part-time inspectors hired through a temporary employment agency. The yearly cost of the part-time inspectors for the track assembly operation is $11,790 and could be totally avoided if the part were purchased. Engineering work: 450 hours, $45/hour. (Although the work decreases by 450 hours, the engineer assigned to the track assembly line also spends time on other products, and there would be no reduction in his salary.) 75 fewer material moves at $30 per move. Required:
1. Ignore the special study, and determine whether the track assembly should be produced internally or purchased from the supplier. Produced internally

the relevant cost of buying the part is the purchase price .
So Total Cost to company (In Buy Option) = 2500 units @ $72 per units = $ 180,000
And total cost to company (In Make option)= Direct Material+Direct Labour+Variable Overhead
= 2500 (45+18+4)
= 2500*67
= $ 167,500
So, since the make option is cheaper the track assembly should be produced internally.

Following are the costs specially required to manufacturethe the product in house:
Set up cost = $ 3,540( 3 set up @ 1180 per set up)
Part time inspector cost = $ 11,790
Material Moves = $ 2,250( 75 moves @ $ 30 per moves )
Total cost (in make option) = (Direct material +Direct Labour+Variable overhead)+Part time inspector cost +Set up cost+Material Moving cost
= $ 167,500 + 11,790 +3,540 +2,250
= $ 185,080
By adding this avoidable costs the make option is costiler by (185,080 - 180,000) $ 5,080. So the company should go for BUY option instead of ,manufacturing inside.

Engineering work is not a qualitative factor that would affect the decision as because its unavoidable eventhough we buy the product from outside.(450*45 = 20,250)

If the additional cost required for insepction of receiving material is more then $ 5,080 then the controller is right else the company shoud opt for buy option. Since the insepction cost of receiving material is not provided we cannot make the decision whether the controller is right or wrong.
