in 1-2 sentences describe why this statement is false:

The humoral immune response involves Natural Killer T Cells that function to degrade ‘non-self’ foreign cells or cells that are infected with pathogens.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The Statement is False.

Natural Killer T Cells that function to degrade ‘non-self’ foreign cells or cells that are infected with pathogens is a type of Cellular Immunity,Not Humoral immunity.

Cellular Immunity: Immune process which causes activation of phagocytes, antigen-sensitized cytotoxic T cells & release of cytokines and chemokines when antigen enters the body.

When a pathogen enters the body-----infected cells are identified & destroyed by natural killer (NK) cells( a type of lymphocyte which can kill cells infected with viruses & tumor cells )

Activation of Natural Killer T cells causes pro-inflammatory & immune modulatory cytokine response & chemokine responses.

Humoral immunity- This is mediated by macromolecules found in extracellular fluids Like antibodies, complement proteins & antimicrobial peptides.

Humoral Immunity is mediated by B cells-

b cells turns into -

1.Memory Cells

2.Plasma cells

memory cells: cells that remember the same pathogen and cause faster antibody production in 2nd infection by same pathogen

Plasma Cells:Antibody-secreting cell arising from B cell differentiation.

They Kills pathogen by

1.Neutralization

2.Agglutination

3.Precipitation

4.ACtivation of compliment system

Neutralization:process in which Antibodies coat extracellular pathogens and neutralize them by blocking key sites on the pathogen .

Agglutination:This is the clumping of cells such as bacteria or red blood cells

Precipitation: formation of lattices (cross-links) when Pathogens are soluble.

Activation of compliment system:Antibodies activates Compliment system that lyse the microbes that have entered into the host
