What is biodiversity? What is extinction? What are the two "types" of extinction and how do they compare to each other? In what type of extinction are humans involved? (Suject: Environmantal Biology)
Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources. This indicates the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat. A high level of biodiversity is normally considered to be important and desirable.
Extinction is an evolution process that leads to the disappearance of a species or a population. When a species becomes extinct, its entire genetic heritage is lost for good.
Extinction is two types: coextinction and mass extinction.
Coextinction is the event where loss of one species leads to the loss of another species in a chain effect. For this extinction, a small impact in the beginning can have a greater effect in future. The reason for this extinction could be the result of the scarcity of food source or a key species becomes extinct and the ecosystem becomes off balance. On the other hand, mass Extinction is a type of extinction event that destroys many species at once. Nearly 2/3 of the animal species that ever existed on the Earth are now extinct. This could be the result of global climate change. Initial extinction is hypothesized as the sea level depletion vs temperature decrease.
