Two lights separated by 2400 meters flash at the same time. An observer in reference frame Q observes the flashes simultaneously. What is the velocity of the reference frame Q?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans.

By simulataneity of the two events we understand their occurance at exactly the same time.

let us assume that the frame Q is moving with a velocity v with respect to an stationary frame S.

now using Lorentz transformation.

and

where t1 and t2 are time measured in S frame, and x1 and x2 are the distance from light source to the point P.

t'1 and t'2 are time measured in Q frame

given that the observer in reference frame Q observes the flashes simultaneously

hence   t'1 = t'2 .

because ct1= x1 and ct2=x2

hence

and the second case when v=0 and the frame is at center of the two light source.

Consider two events, A and B. In an inertial reference frame S, event A occurs at a time deltaT after event B, and event A occurs as positive x=0 and event B at x=L.
