Two wires separated by 2 meters are carrying current in the same direction. One carries a current of 2 amps and the other carries a current of 3 amps. For the following, show all work starting with the equations at the top of the first page and/or explain your reasoning. Do NOT simply write down a formula specifically derived for this problem.

  1. Find the force on the wire carrying the 3-amp current. In which direction does it point?
  1. Find the force on the wire carrying the 2-amp current. In which direction does it point?
  1. Will the wires attract each other or repel?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Let the force acting on the 3-amp current-carrying wire is F3.

Given that current on 3-amp wire I1= 3 A.

The current on the 2-amp wire is I2=2 A.

The distance between them is d= 2 meters.

The force on the 3-amp wire by the 2-amp wire is

The direction of the force is towards the 2-amp wire from the 3-amp wire.

b)  Let the force acting on the 3-amp current-carrying wire is F2.

The force on the 2-amp wire by the 3-amp wire is

The direction of the force on the 2-amp wire by the 3-amp wire is towards the 3-amp wire from the 2-amp wire.

c) So, two-wire attract each other.

Note: If the direction of the current same for two wires then they attract each other and if the direction of the current opposite direction they repel each other.
