Many of organizations are relying on IT services to process their daily operational and business processes. However, on the other hand, some of these organizations do not fully enjoy the benefit of these IT services as intended. To a great extent, this is dependent on the alignment between the party who provides IT services and the party who are using that services.

The degree of misalignment is normally higher and commonly found among smaller companies as in the SME (Small-Medium Enterprise). MNC (Multi-National Company) are normally have a higher degree of alignment between the providers and the users of the IT services. Factors can be classified into different criteria such as communication, competency, governance, partnership etc. Let's discuss each of the criteria in detail.

Criteria: Communication
Lack of formal networks or channels to share people in different units.
Lack of trust between the business units and IT units. This can lead to less knowledge transfer.
Lack of communication between the IT department and the end users of the business.
Management problems in Organisation can lead to communication gaps.

Criteria: competency
Lack of standards by IT and business.
Improper metrices to measure IT contribution to business.
Inability to link technical metrics to business.


Criteria: Governance
Lack of instructions on IT/business planning and requirement.
Poor Leadership.
Low level software development.
Poor understanding of IT on the bigger picture.


Criteria: partnership
Not clearly defined responsibilities between IT and the business.
Lack of trust on IT which in turn leads to lack of innovation.
Lack of awareness of IT by top management people in business.
Non cooperative business staff, which leads to lack of knowledge share.
