1.write an equation to describe the method of converting a water insoluble organic acid into a water-soluble salt.
2.during the process of using a separator funnel an emulsion is occasionally formed. how may the emulsion be broken
3.what is the iupac name for methylene chloride

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Water soluble acids such as carboxylic acid, phnols are disolved in sodium hydroxide they get converted into water solule sodium salts

Water insoluble           Water soluble

2. During the process if an emulsion has formed, centrifuse or try slowly and gently swirling the solution in the separatory funnel. If the emulsion does not disperse after swirling, add a small amount of saturated aqueous sodium chloride or water soluble detergent solution to the liquid in the separatory funnel which will sometimes help in breaking the emulsion. But consider the reactivity of any reagent present in the separatory funnel before adding the salt.

3. IUPAC name for methylene chloride is Dichloromethane.
