1.Describe the difference between a hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic solution. What happens to red blood cells in each?
2.What processes disturb water balance? Why?
3.What biomolecule is the source of nitrogenous waste? Name three forms of nitrogenous wastes. Place these in order of most toleast toxic. Which ones use ATP?
4.Name some animals that are osmoregulators and osmoconformers. What do these terms mean?
5.What are the three functions of excretory organs?
Question no 1
A hypertonic solutions is the one that has higher amount of solute in comparison to the blood . They will have higher amount of solute in comparison. EXAMPLE is 3% nacl solution.
When RBC is immersed in such a solution then it will lead to the movement of fluid from the RBC into the solution. This is because the movement of fluid occur from lower concentrations of solute to the higher concentration of solute. So shrinking if RBC will occur
2) isotonic solutions are the one that has the same concentration of solute in comparison to the body fluid. So an example is 0.9% nacl . When RBC is kept in this kind of a solution no change in concentration will occur so RBC will remain as it is
3) Hypotonic solution has less concentration of solute when comparing with the blood. Example are 0.3% nacl solutions
When RBC is kept in such a solution it will only lead to the swelling of RBC as the movements of fluid into the RBC takes place . This is because fluid move from lower concentrations of solute to higher concentration of solute.so swelling of RBC takes place
