1 Placing a red blood cell in a hypotonic solution will lead it to increase its size/swell.
As the solution is hypotonic ( lower concentration outside the cell ) the red blood cell will swell as a result of the inflow of the water into the cell untill the external solution and cytosol are isotonic.
a The cytoplasm separates the interstitial fluid from the cytoplasm.
The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer with a primary function to protect the cell from its surroundings.
b Three nucleotides are needed to code one amino acid.
The nucleotide triplet that encodes an amino acid is called a codon. Each group of three nucleotides encodes one amino acid.
c Water crosses the plasma membrane by means of Osmosis.
Water can diffuse through the lipid bilayer even though it is polar because it is very small molecule.Water passes through the cell membrane / plasma membrane by osmosis (diffusion of water across semi permeable membrane) because of the osmotic pressure between the inside and outside of the cell.
d When a mutation occurs in a gene involved with cell growth or division, resulting in the uncontrolled growth of cells, this condition is called Cancer
Mutation in genes can cause cancer by accelerating cell division or inhibiting normal controls on the system such as cell cycle arrest or cell death. As mass of cancer cells grow developing into a tumor.
e The chromosomal structure that limits the number of cell division of a cell is the Telomere.
Telomere is a region of nucleotide sequence at each end of a chromosome which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes.
f Which of these cellular organelles is membranous?
Mitochondria is a membranous cell organelle. It is a double membrane bound organelle found in most eukaryotic organisms.
