If the oxygen level is experimentally manipulated in a fish tank, what type of factor is the resulting heart rate of the fish?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Any minute change in the body of fish can alter its heart rate like pH of water, temperature of water, osmolality and even concentration of dissolved oxygen in water. Overall we can assume that any disturbance can cause significant change in the heart rate of teleost.

Here, if tank is connected to the mechanical pump for the oxygen and if the concentration of oxygen is less then heart rate will increase to pump blood to the gills here oxygen can be extracted from the blood capillaries of gills by counter current mechanism of gaseous exchange. On contrary, if concentration of oxygen is higher in the water then the heart rate would be slower to extract enough oxygen by the same mechanism as stated earlier i.e. counter current method and higher molecule of oxygen can easily pass thorugh diffusion process.

Oxygen demand is a term biologists use to describe the oxygen needed by fish and other aquatic organisms for survival. The Environmental Protection Agency conducted a study of a wetland area. In this wetland environment, the mean oxygen demand was μ = 9.6 mg/L with 95% of the data ranging from 6.0 mg/L to 13.2 mg/L. Let x be a random variable that represents oxygen demand in this wetland environment. Assume x has a probability distribution that is approximately normal....
