Which of the following are advantages of die casting over sand casting (four best answers):
(A) better surface finish,
(B) closer tolerances,
(C) higher melting temperature metals,
(D) higher production rates,
(E) larger parts can be cast, and (F) mold can be reused?
Advantages of Die Casting over Sand Casting are the following-
a) Better Surface finish
Die casted surfaces have higher surface finish due to high amount of pressure involved while injecting the molten metal into the smooth inner surface die. Sand casted surfaces face a number of defects over the surface like rat tails, run outs, swell, cuts, washes etc leading to inferior surface finish.
b) Close Tolerances
Because of the high pressure involved in Die casting, any narrow sections, complex shapes and fine surfaces with close tolerances can be produced as compared to sand casting.
c) Higher Production rate
As the process is a continuous one, Die casting can produce a larger quantity of parts more quickly than through other casting processes, such as sand casting.
d) Mold can be reused
As the die mold is metallic, it can be used again and again. But, the sand mold is expendable.
