The engineer was charged with a crime that he developed a device that enabled cars to evade US pollution rules.
He was trying to deceive the government by falsely certifying cars that were not as per required standards.
To keep a check on pollution, every country has certain guidelines for vehicles that can be used on the roads. These guidelines are a non-negotiable contract that binds the seller to produce product under specified rules and regulations. Developing a device that can evade such rules is harmful to a large extend.
The engineer was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of $ 200,000. Apart from this, Volkswagen has admitted guilt, agreeing to spend as much as $25bn to address US claims
Liang's lawyer had urged the judge to consider a lighter penalty in recognition of his assistance with other cases.
Liang, who is still employed by Volkswagen but does not work as an engineer, can appeal.
