If the 95% confidence interval for the average number of runs scored in a baseball game is 5.8<population mean<6.7, what does this maen?

Solutions

Expert Solution

First of all we will try to understand meaning of confidence interval.

Let us consider, we have a population which involves a single unknown parameter. Now we want to estimate that unknown parameter. So we take a sample from that population and obtain a range of value for that parameter and assign a specific probability that our true parameter value will lie in this range.

Or we can say in specific language that we obtain two quantities C1 and C2 which are known as the confidence limits and the interval [C1 , C2 ] within which the unknown value of the population parameter is expected to lie, is called confidence interval and (1-a) is called the confidence coefficient.

In this question it is given that average runs scored in baseball game is [5.8 , 6.7] with 95% confidence coefficient.

It mean that if a game of baseball will be played again then the expected number of runs will lie in this interval with probability 0.95 or we can say, out of 100 games 95 games score will lie in this interval.

step by step please. It is reported that a 95% confidence interval for the population average of a variable X normally distributed is [37.1;46.9]. Consider that the population standard deviation is 12.5 and that the interval was obtained considering a population of infinite size. If P (Z> 1.96) = 0.025, what is the sample size used in this study?
