The thyroid gland is a small gland weighing normally less than one ounce, located in front of neck.it is made up of halves called  that lie alongwith windpipe called (trachae) are joined together by narrow band of thyroid tissue,konwn as isthmus.

These are mainly control and functions of thyroid gland as below:

1.Regulation of basic metabolic rate and intake of oxygen.

2. Regulation of cellular metabolism.

3.It stimulates the synthesis of protein

4.It increases the breakdownnof lipid.

5.It is responsible for growth and development of body.

6. Helps in normal growth of nervous sytem, brain and reproductive organs.

Effects of hypersecretion:

1. BMR can be increased about 60- 100%.Tehe person is hyperactive.

2.Increased uptake of glucose by cells, increase gluconeogenesis

3.Increased breakdown of glucose.

4.Fat resreves are depleted, Increased oxidation of the free fatty acid, increased oxidation of the cholesterol in the bile.

Effects of hyposecretion:

1.BMR decreases to about half the normal rate.the person becomes sluggish.

2.Decrease in uptake of glucose by cells. Decreased gluconeogenesis. and decreased breakdown of glucose.
