Thyroid gland is one of the endocrine glands which is composed of two lobes which are located on either side of the trachea.

Thyroid hormones play an important role in the regulation of the basal metabolic rate (BMR). They also support the process of RBC formation.It control the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fatsa maintain water and electrolyte balance.A protein hormone TCT is also secreted by thyroid gland which regulates the blood calcium levels.

The two lobes are interconnected with a thin flap of connective tissue called isthmus.

The gland is composed of follicular cells which can synthesize two hormones T4 and T3.

For the normal rate of T4 and T3 iodine is essential.

Deficiency of iodine results in hypothyroidism and ends up with an enlarged thyroid gland called goitre.

When the rate of synthesize and secretion of the thyroid hormone is increased uts called hyperthyroidism.This may be due to the cancer in the gland or development of nodules in the gland.
