11. Dr. Fuzzy wants to know whether cat people or dog people have better eyesight. She gets two groups of people together. One group likes dogs and the other group likes cats. Then, she gives everyone an eye test. What statistical test would be most appropriate to use? a. Independent-samples t test b. Related-samples t test c. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) d. z-score for sample mean 12. Sir Mix-A-Lot wants to know whether listening to Mozart makes people happier. He gathers one group of people and gives them a questionnaire about their happiness level. Then he asks everyone to listen to some Mozart. Afterwards, everyone answers the happiness questionnaire again. Which statistical test is best to use? a. Independent-samples t test b. Related-samples t test c. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) d. z-score for sample mean

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Here, some respondents are dog people, while others are cat people. The sample for each of them are different. A cat people may or may not be a dog people, and vice-versa. That is to say, they do not have any correlation (in non-statistical sense) among each other. The respondants are independent.
The standard deviation of the population is not known. Hence, z-score cannot be used.
Also, we are not as such interested with Analysis of Variance.

Hence, independent-samples t-test is to be performed here.

  • Here, the respondents are the same people. At first, a sample of people are asked about their happiness level. After this, they are made to listen to music. And, after that, the same people are asked of their happiness level. Hence, the respondents are not independent, and infact are the same persons. Hence, they are related.
The standard deviation of the population is not known. Hence, z-score cannot be used.
Also, we are not as such interested with Analysis of Variance.

Hence, Related-samples t-test is to be performed here.

Dr. Morozov is interested in whether people who live in noisy parts of a city have worse hearing. To test this, she administers hearing tests to 6 randomly selected healthy eighteen-year-olds who have grown up in one of the noisiest parts of the city. On the hearing test, they obtain a score of M = 17, s = 3.10. This test was designed so that healthy 18-year-olds should score 20 (i.e.μ = 20, σ is unknown). Go through the hypothesis...
