In 800 APA essay discuss the control of thyroid gland and hyper and hyposecretion from it on the body
or close to 800 words
Thyroid gland is a type of endocrine gland which is situated at the root of neck on both side of trachea. The hormones secreted by thyroid gland are-
1. Tetraiodothyronine or T4 (thyroxine)
2. Tri- iodothyronine or T3
3. Calcitonin.
Functions of thyroid hormones-
1. Thyroxine increases the metabolic activity of body tissues. It increases BMR by increasing the oxygen consumption of the tissues.
2. Thyroid hormones increases the synthesis of proteins in our body and thus help in promoting growth.
3. Thyroxine stimulates metabolism of carbohydrates . It increases glucose uptake from GIT and enhance gluconeogenesis.
4. Thyroxine decrease fat storage by mobilizing fat from adipose tissues and convert them to free fatty acid .
5. Thyroxine increases body temperature by increasing heat production in body.
6. Thyroxine is essential for maintaining the body weight. Increase in thyroxine decreases the body weight.
7. Thyroxine increases overall activity of cardiovascular system and respiratory system.
Control of thyroid gland
secretion of thyroid gland is controlled by anterior pituitary and hypothalamus.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secreted by anterior pituitary is the major factor for synthesis and release of thyroid hormone.
Hypothalamus regulate thyroid secretion by controlling TSH secretion through thyrotropic releasing hormone (TRH).
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Increased secretion of thyroid hormones is called hyperthyroidism.
Signs and symptoms-
1. Increased heat production in body. Increases BMR . Increased sweating.
2. Decrease body weight.
3. Diarrhea due to increased GI motility.
4. Muscular weakness because of excessive protein catabolism.
5. Nervousness, fatigue, inability to sleep, tremor all because of excess stimulation of nervous system.
6. Tachycardia and atrial fibrilation.
HYPOTHYROIDISM
Decrease secretion of thyroid hormone is called hypothyroidism.
signs and symptoms-
in children it causes CRETINISM. Symptoms include-
1. Sluggish movement and croaking sounds while crying.
2. Stunted growth with bloated body
3. Tougue is big and it hangs down
In adults it causes MYXEDEMA. Symptoms include-
1. Swelling un face.
2. Bagginess under the eyes.
3. Non pitting type of edema.
4. Atherosclerosis
5. Anemia
6. Fatigue and muscular weaknesses.
7. Increase body weight.
