Experiment: Purification of Organic Compounds by Simple Distillation - using a mixture of aqueous ethanol.
Q:Would the total volume of the fractions add up to 80ml (the initial volume) ? Explain why based on your results.
Distillation is a purification technique where to different liquids are separated if they have different boiling points. The liquid which has low boiling point it gets distilled out first and liquid which has high boiling point gets distilled later. Ideally all fractions you collect should add up to the total initial volume. But practically it may not be possible, because the low boiling point liquid may evaporate to the atmosphere while transferring or handling. Hence practically add up volume may not be same as it was of initial volume of the mixture. But with precaution if we try to reduce the losses then total volume should add up to as it was initially.
