1. This structure is the major routing area where sensory information is sorted before being sent to the correct processing center in the brain

A. corpus callosum B. medulla C. pons D. thalamus

2. Some sensory information taken in by the right eye is processed by the right side of the brain

A. True. B. False

3. Current data suggests that the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has an R0 approximately equal to 2.2. What percentageof the population would need to be immune to the virus to effectively halts its spread? Answers should be to the nearest 2 decimal places. Do not include the % symbol in your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. D. Thalamus

Thalamus the major routing area where all sensory information (except smell) is sorted before being sent to the correct processing center in the brain. Thalamus is situated in dorsall portion of diencephalon and composed of gray matters. Exchanges of information takes place from thalamus bcause several nerve fibers projected in all directions to the cerebral cortex. Thalamus is also known as relay station.

2. B. False

There are two half of brain (two hemispheres) left and right, generally these two halves recieve information from opposide body parts (except nose ie., right side of brain deals with right nostril and vice versa). Sensory information taken in by the right eye is processed by the left side of the brain and left side of brain for the right eye.

3. Answer is 54 percent.

In given question R0 (approximately) for novel coronavirus is 2.2

To halts sread of novel coronavirus it is necesary to acheive herd immunity.

To achieve herd immunity, R0-1/R0 of the population is to be immune.

It means,

2.2-1/2.2 = 0.54

and in percent, (R0-1/R0) X 100

i.e., (2.2-1/2.2) X 100 = 54

Hence, 54 percent of the population would need to be immune to the virus to effectively halts its spread

A binary message m, where m is equal either to 0 or to 1, is sent over an information channel. Assume that if m = 0, the value s = −1.5 is sent, and if m = 1, the value s = 1.5 is sent. The value received is X, where X = s + E, and E ∼ N(0, 0.66). If X ≤ 0.5, then the receiver concludes that m = 0, and if X > 0.5, then the...
