Peptidoglycan is basically a polysaccharide which is made up of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM) which are derivatives of glucose. The amino acids i.e. L-alanine, D-glutamine, L-lysine or meso-diaminopimelic acid (DPA), and D-alanine cross links the peptidoglycan chains.
Both gram positive and gram negative bacterial cell walls contain peptidoglycan.
