Explain what John McWhorter means in What Language Is (And What it Isn't and What it Could be) by (a) "languages are ingrown" and (b) "languages are disheveled."

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. Ingrown languages means complicated languages. Persian is an example where it was the official language of a large empire. Hence, mostly the officers learned it perfectly. The others simplified it and many irregular words are seen. Hence it is complex or ingrown.

b. Disheveled languages means messy and illogical words used. Idioms are a reason why language is disheveled. Taking English as an example, we use sentences like -He likes me", "I like him" .This is illogical and confusing.
