Masters students 40 38 12 90
PhD students 10 12 8 30
Professors 20 15 15 50
Totals 100 80 70 250
_____
Business | Engineering | Nursing | totals | |
undergradate students | 30 | 15 | 35 | 80 |
masters students | 40 | 38 | 12 | 90 |
PhD students | 10 | 12 | 8 | 30 |
Professors | 20 | 15 | 15 | 50 |
Total | 100 | 80 | 70 | 250 |
The probability that this participant is from business is = 100/250 = 0.4
The probability that this participant is a PhD student is = 30/250 = 0.12
The probability that this participant is a nursing professor is = 70/250 = 0.28
The probability that this participant is either an undergraduate or a master’s student is = ( 80 + 90 )/250 = 170/250 = 0.68
The probability that this participant is either from business or a PhD student is = ( 100 + 30 - 10 )/250 = 120/250 = 0.48
The probability that this participant is a Professor knowing that he/she is in nursing is = probability that this participant is a Professor knowing and he/she is in nursing / probability that this participant is in nursing
probability that this participant is a Professor knowing and he/she is in nursing = 15/250
probability that this participant is in nursing = 70/250
The probability that this participant is a Professor knowing that he/she is in nursing is = (15/250)/(70/250) = 15/70 = 0.2143
The probability that this participant is from business knowing that he/she is a master’s student is = probability that this participant is from business knowing and he/she is a master’s student is / probability that this participant is a master’s student is
probability that this participant is from business knowing and he/she is a master’s student is = 40/250
probability that this participant is a master’s student is = 90/250
The probability that this participant is from business knowing that he/she is a master’s student is = 40/90
The probability that this participant is from business knowing that he/she is a master’s student is = 0.4444
