Calculate the theoretical and percent yield of terephthalic acid, based on PET being the limiting reagent.

MW terephthalic acid= 166.13 g/mol

MW PET= 192 g/mol

Mass of product = 0.76 g

Solutions

Expert Solution

In the reaction,

PET is the limiting reactant

starting with 1 g of PET

moles of PET = 1 g/192 g/mol

                       = 0.00521 mol

Theoretical yield of terephthalic acid = 0.00521 x 166.13

                                                           = 0.865 g

Percent yield of reaction = 0.76 x 100/0.865

                                        = 87.863%
