If the volumetric procedure yields more accurate results, why perform the gravimetric procedure at all?

Solutions

Expert Solution

We know we perform quantitative analysis in volumetry. This is important technique for quantitative analysis. Its results are more accurate. If it so then why we use gravimetry :

There are some reasons behind it :

Gravimetry :

Principle : Weighing the sample.

In this technique we can reproce the amount of the sample.

Qualitative as well as quantitative analysis both can be donw with it.

It work at large scale we call it as macroanalysis.

Most important : If we want to analyse the compound which is volatile. for that compound we get difficulty to use volumetry. But gravimetry can also analyse it.

Analysis of volatile substance :

This analysis is done either by weighing the difference in mass lost or by mass gain when it is trapped.

There are many methods to perform this analysis for example thermogravimetry.

There are other use also but for the above mentioned reasons gravimetry is performed even if volumetry has more perfect result.

Explain why each of the following actions would negatively impact the results of a recrystallization procedure. Answer each in two sentences or less. i) After achieving proper dissolution, immediately cooling the solution in an ice bath. ii) Dissolving all of the material at room temperature, then heating to near the solvent boiling point, followed by cooling to 0 °C. iii) Upon collection of the recrystallized material on a filter, rinsing with 1-2 mL of room temperature solvent.
